In this blog post, we explained how applications like OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and Dropbox are configured to store files in the cloud and also to keep offline copies on your local drive. The post detailed that if several people were synching a folder locally to their device and a 1GB file was stored in it, each user will download that file, using a lot of bandwidth and slowing down the network.
Today, we’re providing a practical guide to help you check these settings.
OneDrive is available as OneDrive for Business and OneDrive Personal.Both can be installed on your device at the same time.
Each application has unique settings. Right clicking on one of the icons will display the application menu.
Once the “Settings” menu has been selected, another menu will be displayed. Here you can add a new account to sync to your device and also select the files and folders you wish to sync. Keep in mind that all files that sync use bandwidth when saved to the cloud and when downloaded back onto your device.
Unselecting these boxes allows a user to keep files online only and not download them.
It’s also possible to select files to make available offline through the “File Explorer” using Microsoft Files on Demand. Data stored in the cloud only is marked with a cloud icon, while data synced to a local device will appear with a little green tick inside a circle. These icons make it easier to determine what data will be pulled to your device.
Selecting any of the files or folders in the File Explorer window and right-clicking on them will also present a menu. Here you can choose to keep the files online only or make them available on your device at all times.
